Japan’s government has offered to give Kenya more than Sh3 billion grant to support energy projects and Universal Health coverage.

This was revealed through the Council of Governors COVID-19 virtual conference where Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Horie Ryoichi pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta to see that the ministries involved conclude on the agreement by end of this week.

“Mr. President, I have one request please instruct the secretaries and the Attorney General to do it on Friday,” Ryoichi said while addressing President Uhuru Kenyatta who officially opened the virtual conference.

According to Ryoichi, the funding will be used to facilitate the provision of medical equipment in more than 10 counties in Kenya and boost electricity in Nakuru and Mombasa counties.

“This support to Kenya will see the facilitation of medical equipment in over 10 counties and for the improvement of power distribution in Nakuru and Mombasa,” Ryoichi added

Under the agreement, Japan also reveals that it will give Kenya 10 ambulances to enhance the capacity of county-level preparedness of the health care system.

The offer comes barely a week after the donor gave Kenya Sh8 billion loan to support Universal health coverage.

The funding was the second phase of a project that was started in 2015 with an initial Sh4 billion loan to support the cause.

While exchanging the notes with Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani, Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Horie Ryoichi said the funding that was signed on August 27 was also meant to help Kenya fight against COVID-19.
