Since their founding in 2010, they have been motivated by a clear vision of ‘being the leading business advisory firm in Africa’ and their recent history suggests they are well on their way.
“There’s a lot that’s going on that we are really proud of as a team as we can see the impact of our work in the market. We are really grateful for the opportunities which our valued clients continue to afford us to serve them,” says Ribin Ondwari, Partner and Head of Real Estate, Banking and Financial Services.
Ashitiva’s success is no secret, with the firm receiving numerous accolades including Law Firm of the Year at the 2017 Nairobi Legal Awards, a finalist for the African Legal Awards 2018 and a ranking by Chambers 2020.
The firm currently has two offices – in Nairobi and Nakuru – but its geographic footprint is increasingly pan-African aided by a focus on digital expansion. While many law firms have experienced turbulence as a result of Covid-19, Ashitiva has viewed this challenge as a means to expedite their pre-existing digital services and complement their overall vision for expansion. Ondwari says, “this enables us to set up our capabilities to enable us to straddle key commercial centers in Africa to enable us to expand.”
Ashitiva Advocates offers full-service expertise in financial services; corporate and commercial; energy, infrastructure and natural resources; dispute resolution and construction. The popularity and demand for advice on the technology, media and communications sector has led to this area being a big growth priority for the firm.
Ashitiva’s recent work has been both exciting and consequential, influenced by the unique circumstances and constraints of the present. The financial difficulties many businesses and individuals are currently facing have led the firm to shift more heavily to helping companies restructure, increase their liquidity and extend their financial facilities.
In line with their digital strategy, they have helped the Kenyan government to bring essential processes online and provide regulatory reviews, updates and approvals during the pandemic. Ondwari sees this work as essential saying, “it’s important we assist the government, which then helps assist other people with their work.” This digital work extends beyond the government to other key areas such as health informatics, energy, infrastructure and public-private partnerships.
Additionally, Ashitiva was recently involved in the sale of units in a large-scale housing development in Kenya, which led to a mutually beneficial outcome for the developer and purchasers. As a result more than 300 Kenyans will be able to complete the purchase of their own homes and the developer will obtain the much needed revenues to sustain them through the pandemic.
Ashitiva’s unwavering commitment to client service and client relationships differentiates the firm from others in the Kenyan market. Ondwari characterises their approach as: “we work beyond our mission statements, to the highest aspirations of our clients. We focus on what they want and enable them to meet their strategic objectives.”
The firm is looking confidently toward the future with an inventive and adaptable outlook. Whether clients are based in Kenya, throughout Africa or beyond, Ashitiva is ready to provide outstanding service guided by excellence, diligence and integrity.
